Wednesday, 29th September 2021: Don’t leave out criteria setting!

Scripture Reading: Act 1:21-22
Wherefore of these men which have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection.

Reflections: Out of 120 people assembled in the upper room, only one person was going to be selected to replace Judas. The task was not going to be easy. However, led by Peter, the apostles chose to set a selection criteria to drive the process. First, those to be selected would have to be confirmed as having been a disciple from the time ofJohn’s baptism until Jesus’ ascension. In addition, the person must also have been a direct witness of the resurrection of Jesus. This narrowed down the selected candidates to just two. Following this, another criterion utilizing the lot casting system was applied which eventually led to the selection of the choicest candidate. Criteria setting is ‘a principle or standard by which something may be judged or decided’. If set properly, It proves to be a useful unbiased tool in helping to make decisions. The selection of the 7 deacons (Acts 6:2-3) ) for instance was criteria driven. Like Peter and the Apostles, let the Holy Spirit lead you to formulate and apply a set of criteria to solving issues whenever the need arises.

Prayer: Oh Lord, help me make use of a Spirit led selection criteria whenever the need arises.

Confession: I make use of a Spirit led selection criteria whenever the need arises.
