Scripture Reading: Judges 11:9
And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, If ye bring me home again to fight against the children of Ammon, and the LORD deliver them before me, shall I be your head?
Reflection: Life as an outcast was not that easy for Jephthah but he carried on. Having been cast out of his father’s house by his half brothers, he had relocated to the land of Tob to make a living. One day he was approached for help by his kinsmen who had thrown him out of his homeland. They needed him to ward of the threat of the Ammonites. Jephthah saw through this request as an opportunity to get back home and also to become a leader of his tribe. He therefore seized the opportunity and accepted the challenge to lead his kinsmen into battle. His victory won him back to his homeland where he was appointed as the ruler. What an opportunity that came the way of Jephthah! Opportunity is ‘an occasion or situation that makes it possible to do something that you want to do or have to do’. God will always allow opportunities to come your way but like Jephthah, you must learn to discern the moment and to seize it. Without that, you may not get far in achieving your goals in life. No wonder Solomon described opportunity as ‘time and chance’ which is needed by all ( Ecclesiastics 9:11). You will sure need it!
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for the opportunities coming my way.
Confession: No God given opportunity will pass me by.
