Scripture Reading: Proverbs 21:11
When a mocker is punished, the fool gains wisdom; but when the wise is instructed, he receives knowledge
Reflections: The writer of Proverbs compares two opposing attitudes and recommends one as exemplary. First, he talks about people who learn their lessons the hard way. They only gain wisdom when they are punished. He labels them as fools and mockers. Then he talks about those who are quick to learn from others and situations and therefore, can stay out of trouble. He calls them wise and underscores that they are teachable in life. A teachable attitude is therefore, proposed as an intelligent behaviour to be emulated by all. According to John Maxwell, ‘teachability is the desire to listen, learn, and apply. It is the willingness to learn, unlearn, and relearn’ God expects you to be teachable in life. A teachable spirit will always prove to be rewarding. It will keep you away from trouble and shame.
Prayer: Oh Lord, help me nurture a teachable attitude in life.
Confession: I am teachable in life. I don’t learn life’s lessons the hard way.
