Scripture Reading:1Pe 5:8
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
Reflections: The Apostle Peter makes us aware of the presence of the devil who lurks around with the aim of looking for people to devour. Clearly those he will get will be the very people who do not stay alert. To forestall this situation Peter admonishes the church to be “sober and vigilant”. While the word “sober” implies having not been drunk with alcohol, ‘vigilant” speaks of alertness. In essence Peter was asking the church to do away with whatever can compromise their alertness in life. The implication is that if you don’t learn to stay alert in life, you will definitely not stay alive. Remain sober and vigilant! Resist whatever seeks to get you to compromise on these.
Prayer: Dear Lord, grant me grace to stay alert in this life.
Confession: By grace, I am kept alert of the enemy and his devices. I shall never be his captive.
