Scripture Reading: Acts 21:12-13
And when we heard these things, both we, and they of that place, besought him not to go up to Jerusalem. Then Paul answered, What mean ye to weep and to break mine heart? for I am ready not to be bound only, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.
Reflections: Believers, warned by the Holy Spirit, urged Paul not to go to Jerusalem. They pleaded with him, but he remained resolute, ready to die for Christ. Paul’s deep commitment to his calling is admirable, but this passage also serves as a caution. While zeal for God’s work is commendable, we must be careful that our desires—even good ones—do not override the Holy Spirit’s directives. Paul had been warned multiple times (Acts 20:23, Acts 21:4), yet he pressed on. His willingness to suffer was noble and in line with diving will, but was his decision to go to Jerusalem what God intended at that particular time? Sometimes, we are so set on our plans that we may want to ignore divine warnings. Passion without discernment can lead to unnecessary or untimely struggles. When God cautions us through His Spirit, wise counsel, or circumstances, we must pause and seek clarity. God’s will is not just about what we do but also about when and how we do it.
Prayer: Lord, help me to discern Your voice above my own desires.
Confession: I do not let my desires override God’s will.
