Scripture Reading: Luke 6: 9-10
Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? To save a life or to destroy it? And looking around them all, he said unto the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so: and his hand was restored whole as the other.
Reflections: It was a Sabbath day. The Pharisees and Scribes knew Jesus would fall into their trap this time. They wanted him to heal the man with a withered hand so they would use the occasion to accuse him. Perceiving their thoughts, Jesus developed a strategy to outwit them. He demanded to know whether it was lawful on the sabbath day to do good or evil, to save a life, or to destroy it. They could not answer him since the response was obviously to do good and to save a life. Jesus then proceeded to heal the man. The scribes and the Pharisees could therefore not lay any charge against him. He had completely outwitted them by the question he posed. To outwit is ‘ to get an advantage over someone by acting more cleverly’. In life, you must be quick to develop strategies to outwit your enemies and render their plans foolish. Depend on the Holy Spirit for directives.
Prayer: Dear Lord, anoint me with the ability to outwit my enemies all the time.
Confession: I will outwit my enemies all the time.
