Scripture Reading :Psalm 8:9 O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth
Reflections: Psalm 8 actually starts and ends with the same information: ‘how excellent is the name of the Lord in all the earth”. The words ‘excellent’ and ‘name’ in this context is worth examining. Excellent in the Hebrew is ‘ addı̂yr’ and it signifies that which is honorable and extremely outstanding. On the other hand, the Hebrew word translated ‘name’ is ‘shem’. It speaks of reputation in life. A reputation is the opinion that people in general have about someone. The submission of the Psalmist that God’s name is excellent implies that God has a reputation that He is above reproach and that whatever He does is done so well. His character is flawless and spotless while his power surpasses all. As God’s child, you are his representative on earth and you must have an excellent name too. You must be reputed in life for that which is honorable and extremely outstanding! No wonder Proverbs 22 declares that ‘ a good name is rather to be chosen than great riches’.
Prayer: Oh Lord, direct my path so that my life will produce an excellent name for your glory.
Confirmation: I bear God’s name which is excellent. I will not compromise my reputation in life as a blameless personality.
