Thursday, 23rd October 2024: Be careful what you ask for!

Scripture Reading: 1 Samuel 8:5-7 NKJV
“And the LORD said to Samuel, ‘Heed the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me, that I should not reign over them.’”

Reflections: In his later years, Samuel, the prophet and judge of Israel, appointed his sons to assist in judging the nation. Unfortunately, they turned to corruption, taking bribes and perverting justice, which led to widespread dissatisfaction among the elders. Instead of seeking reform, the people demanded a king to rule over them, desiring to be like neighboring nations. Samuel was displeased, but when he brought the matter to God, the Lord revealed that the people’s request stemmed from a lack of trust in Him. Although God granted their request, it wasn’t because it aligned with His will but because their hearts had turned away from Him. This narrative reminds us to check our motives when making requests of God. Sometimes, He may allow us to pursue what we desire, not because it’s best, but to let us experience the consequences of misplaced trust in human solutions over divine guidance (1 Sam 8:18).

Prayer: Heavenly Father, keep me from seeking solutions outside of Your plan.

Confession: My heart is aligned with God, and I seek His will above all.
