Scripture Reading: 1 Samuel 18:8-9
“Then Saul was very angry, and this saying displeased him; and he said, ‘They have ascribed to David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed only thousands. Now what more can he have but the kingdom?’ So, Saul eyed David from that day forward.”
Reflections: David’s victorious defeat of Goliath brought him sudden fame and admiration among the people of Israel. As he returned from battle, the people celebrated him, singing that he had slain “ten thousands” while Saul had slain only “thousands.” This praise, though genuine, stirred jealousy in Saul’s heart. From that day on, Saul viewed David as a threat rather than an ally. What was meant to honor David indirectly put him in harm’s way. This passage reminds us of the need for discernment in how we praise others. While genuine praise can uplift and encourage, excessive or comparative praise can breed resentment, jealousy, or even rivalry in others. Saul’s response serves as a cautionary tale of how powerful words can be. The praises David received inadvertently ignited jealousy, and from then on, Saul’s heart was set against him, leading to many trials in David’s life. True praise uplifts without diminishing others, honoring each person’s unique contributions.
Prayer: Lord, grant me wisdom to praise others in ways that build up and not tear down.
Confession: I will celebrate others with a pure heart, avoiding words that provoke rivalry.
