Scripture Reading: Eph 6:6-7
Not with eyeservice, as men pleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart; With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men:
Reflections: Paul cautions about the rendering of eyeservice and says this should not be mentioned among servants of Christ. Eyeservice is defined as ‘work or service done only when the employer is watching’. Translated from the Greek word ‘ophthalmodouleia’, the term is used to ‘express the conduct of slaves, who work only when they are watched, and whose motive, therefore, is not fidelity to duty, but either to avoid punishment or to gain reward from their masters’ (ISBE). Whether you are being watched or not, your source of motivation for rendering a service must only be driven by your commitment and loyalty to excellence. This is what attracts divine commendation and reward. Remember, fidelity to duty is what God measures!
Prayer: Dear Lord, please help me serve willingly and not with eyeservice..
Confession: Whether I am watched or not, I deliver as expected. I give no place to eyeservice in my life!
