Scripture Reading: Judges 8:23
And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the Lord shall rule over you.
Reflections: The Midianite hosts fell to Gideon. They took to their heels when they realized they couldn’t match the military strength of Gideon. Gideon and his soldiers however pursued and killed them all. Their last quest was to find the two Kings of the Midianites, Zebah and Zalmunna. When they found them, Gideon had their heads cut off. This signaled the final and decisive victory over the Midianite oppression. Astounded by this rare feat of Gideon, the people of Israel proposed that he should reign over them as a king. Gideon however declined this. He knew God was their King and was therefore careful not to be moved to take His place. At the time Israel did not operate a kingship system like the nations surrounding them. God was their King. Like Gideon, no matter how successful you become in life, you must resist every motivation that drives you to take the place of God.
Prayer: Dear Lord help me to remember that no matter what, I can never take up your place.
Confession: I am careful not to take God’s place in life.
