Sunday, 16th October 2016: The devil cannot get you captive until you stand in opposition to God’s word!

Scripture Reading: 2 Timothy 2:24-26
And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.

Reflection: The Apostle Paul writes to Timothy and shows him how important it is for pastors to preach the truth to get people ‘ who oppose themselves’ to repent. Once they repent, he continues, the snare of the devil in their lives would be broken. A snare is simply a trap to get you captive. A good question to ask is how do people get ensnared by the devil? The phrase ‘ oppose themselves’ gives us the answer. It comes from the Greek word ‘ antidiatithemai’ which means ‘to set oneself opposite’. Thus when you set yourself opposite to the word of God you put yourself in a position where you fall prey to the snares of the devil. The good news therefore remains thus: The devil cannot get you captive until you stand in opposition to God’s word! The case of Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden is a clear example. The devil was only able to get them, when they went against God’s word. Just remain obedient to the word of God! It will keep the snares of the devil out of business. Keep abiding by HIS word!

Prayer: Oh Lord, keep me away from the snares of the devil. Help me to keep your word and not to oppose it.

Confession: I am obedient to God’s word. I render the snares of the devil useless. I cannot be held captive by the devil.
