Saturday, 5th October 2024: Walk in integrity: Speak words of truth and honour your commitments!

Scripture Reading: Judges 11:30-31, 35
“And Jephthah made a vow to the Lord: ‘If you give the Ammonites into my hands, whatever comes out of the door of my house to meet me when I return in triumph from the Ammonites will be the Lord’s, and I will sacrifice it as a burnt offering.’ … When Jephthah saw her, he tore his clothes and cried, ‘Oh no, my daughter! You have brought me down and I am devastated. I have made a vow to the Lord that I cannot break.’”

Reflections: In a moment of desperation, Jephthah made a rash vow to the Lord, promising to offer whatever came out of his house as a burnt offering. To his shock, his daughter, his only child, emerged. Despite the heartbreaking reality, Jephthah honoured his vow and dedicated her to the Lord’s service. This story underscores the weight of our words. Jephthah’s impulsive promise reminds us to consider the consequences before making any commitment. Too often, we speak without thinking, especially in moments of stress or emotion. Additionally, the passage teaches us the sacredness of promises and the cost of integrity. Keeping our word, even when it’s difficult, reflects our faithfulness and character. True integrity is tested when honouring our promises requires personal sacrifice.

Prayer: Father, grant me the wisdom to weigh my words and the strength to honour my commitments.

Confession: I walk with integrity. I speak words of truth and honour my commitments.
