Scripture Reading: 2Kings 1:16
And he said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Forasmuch as thou hast sent messengers to enquire of Baalzebub the god of Ekron, is it not because there is no God in Israel to enquire of his word? therefore thou shalt not come down off that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die
Reflections: King Ahaziah of Samaria ran into trouble with God which led to his death. It all happened when he failed to consult God for his ailment and instead turned to seek the opinion of Baalzebub, the god of Ekron. To compound matters, he summoned Elijah, whom God had used to speak against his abominable act, to his palace. He was not in the least remorseful. On arrival at the palace, Elijah, without fear, confirmed his earlier prophecy and proceeded to inform Ahaziah of his impending death due to his unrighteous action. Ahaziah died, true to his prophetic words. The fate that befell Ahaziah can easily be seen as a result of repeated contempt. First, he had dared to prefer the services of a heathen god to that of God. Secondly, he had the audacity to query the prophetic declaration of Elijah. His sad end indicates the need to avoid treating God continuously with contempt. In this regard, we don’t ever have to slight God. He is incomparable. We must give Him His due place all the time! He is God alone!
Prayer: Dear Lord, have the first place in my life.
Confession: I don’t treat God with contempt.
