Scripture Reading: Psalm 97:10
Ye that love the LORD, hate evil: he preserveth the souls of his saints; he delivereth them out of the hand of the wicked.
Reflection: The Psalmist discovers a marker or proof that indicates that someone loves the Lord. It is his/her hatred for evil. Evil refers to something that is morally bad or wicked. Hatred on the other hand is a treatment you mete out to what is morally bad or wicked. To hate something is therefore to treat it with absolute disdain, resentment, hostility, detestation and abhorrence. Such feelings can never be hidden. To hate evil therefore simply means you have an avowed stance against what is morally bad and wicked. You do not condone it. You speak against it. You desist from indulging in it or encouraging someone else to be a partaker of it. Your actions and reactions towards what is evil are clear and visible to all. People see and can confirm that you will have nothing to do with what evil stands for or seeks to achieve. The conclusion of the matter is clear! you cannot claim to love the Lord if you do not hate evil! We can never deceive God. Remember Paul’s words to Timothy- ‘Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity (2 Tim 2:19). It is time to demonstrate that you hate evil and to depart from it.
Prayer: Oh Lord, give me the grace to hate evil.
Confession: I will not love and condone that which is evil. I cannot say I love the Lord if I hate evil. I will demonstrate hatred to what is morally bad and wicked in life.
