Scripture Reading: Numbers 32:5-6
Wherefore, said they, if we have found grace in thy sight, let this land be given unto thy servants for a possession, and bring us not over Jordan. And Moses said unto the children of Gad and to the children of Reuben, Shall your brethren go to war, and shall ye sit here?
Reflection: The people of Israel were on their way to Canaan to possess their possessions as promised and instructed by God. Just before they got to the brink of the Jordan, a river they needed to cross over into Canaan, they spotted the land of Jazer and Gilead. The fertile nature of this land attracted and diverted the attention of the tribe of Reuben and Gad. The two tribes requested that they should be left behind to occupy this land while the rest continued to Canaan. After all, this land was also fertile enough to support their livelihood. Moses was so disappointed by their action and had to stir them up to reverse this decision. As he rightly pointed out, all was not going to end well with them if they choose to discontinue the journey. Watch out! Don’t allow what seems good in your sight to sway you away from the ultimate. In life you should be careful not to be enticed by the beauty and pleasures of this world as you seek to follow God’s instructions. Let nothing replace your ‘Canaan’. Ask God for wisdom!
Prayer: Lord, please grant me wisdom to live by so that I will only settle for what you have ordained for my life. Don’t let me be swayed by what I see!
