Scripture Reading: 2 Samuel 3:27-28 (KJV)
“And when Abner was returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside in the gate to speak with him quietly, and smote him there under the fifth rib, that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother. And afterward when David heard it, he said, I and my kingdom are guiltless before the LORD for ever from the blood of Abner the son of Ner.”
Reflections: Bitterness and vengeance are destructive forces that harm not only their intended target but also those who harbor them. In this passage, Joab, consumed by bitterness over Asahel’s death, killed Abner, disrupting peace efforts and bringing guilt upon his family. Joab’s actions show how unchecked bitterness distorts judgment and leads to sin. Though he believed he was avenging his brother, his actions stemmed from personal vendetta, not justice. David, aware of the consequences, distanced himself and his kingdom from the bloodshed. This story reminds us that God calls us to release bitterness and trust Him to administer justice. Seeking revenge usurps God’s role, worsening situations and perpetuating pain, while forgiveness frees us, aligns us with God’s heart, and allows healing and restoration.
Prayer: Lord, cleanse my heart of bitterness and any desire for vengeance.
Confession: I release all bitterness and resentment from my heart.
