Scripture Reading: 2 Sam 3:8-9
So do God to Abner, and more also, except, as the LORD hath sworn to David, even so I do to him;To translate the kingdom from the house of Saul, and to set up the throne of David over Israel and over Judah, from Dan even to Beersheba.
Reflection: Saul’s death set the stage for David to be enthroned as King over both Judah and Israel. Abner, Saul’s army commander however stood in the way of David and made this impossible. He enthroned Ishbosheth, Saul’s son as King over Israel. This limited the kingdom of David. However one day, confusion erupted between Abner and Ishbosheth. Ishboshth accused him wrongly and this got him infuriated. The infuriation turned to the advantage of David. It caused Abner to respond to God’s prophetic word concerning David. He broke his alliance with Ishbosheth and swore to turn the kingdom over to David with the words ‘ the LORD promised with an oath that he would take the kingdom away from Saul’s family and give it to David. And I swear I will make sure that happens. God will make David king of Judah and Israel. He will rule from Dan to Beersheba’. By this, the stumbling block to David’s destiny was over.
