Scripture Reading: Gen 14:22
And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lifted mine hand unto the LORD, the most high God, the possessor of heaven and earth,
Reflections: Abram refused the gift from the King of Sodom, telling him that his hands were lifted only to the LORD, the most high God. He had come into contact with this name following his defeat over the coalition of 5 kings who attacked Sodom and took away his nephew Lot (Gen 14:19). In Hebrew, this name is rendered ‘El Elyon’. It means there is no other God besides or above God. It implies that because of His utmost superiority, there is no god or created being that should ever be worshipped. The story of the Ark of God captured by the Philistines tells it all (1 Samuel 5:1-8). When they placed the Ark by Dagon their god, they found out the next day that the statue of Dagon had fallen, bowing completely to the God of Israel. After they set it up again, they returned the next day to discover that this time around, not only had he fallen but had his head and hands cut off into pieces. God will prove Himself as El Elyon when you refuse to worship any other god. Like Abram, when your hands are lifted only unto Him, He will demonstrate His superiority over any god your enemies will consult against you.
Prayer: Dear Lord, I acknowledge you as the El Elyon. My hands are lifted to you.
Confession: I cannot be defeated by any other god. My hands are lifted only unto El Elyon, the Most High!
