Scripture Reading: 1 Kings 13:18
He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the LORD, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied unto him.
Reflection: It was evident that God was going to use him powerfully in the land. The young prophet of Judah had finished delivering a prophetic message with an immediate display of divine power leading to the split up of of the altar and the withering and restoration of the hand of the King. The command from God that he should not eat and drink in anybody’s house was fresh in his mind. He did not therefore yield to king’s request to dine with him. As he set off homewards, he was approached by an older Prophet. This old prophet claimed an angel of God had asked him to host the young prophet in his house for the night and to serve him with something to eat and drink. This was a complete lie calculated to cause the young prophet to compromise the word of God. Believing this lie, the young prophet followed suit. The worst happened to him after eating and drinking. On his way out from the old Prophet’s house, a lion met and killed him. What a sad story! In life you should be aware that there are people who will cunningly cause you to compromise God’s word and wreck your faith. Paul calls such people ‘dogs’! ( Philippians 3:2). You must have the ability to discern them and the will power to steadfastly resist them and their ways.
Prayer: Oh Lord, give me the ability to discern those who will cunningly cause me to stray away from your word and help me to walk away from them.
Confession: I have the the ability to discern those who will cunningly cause me to stray away from the standards of God’s word. I will not give myself to them.
