Scripture Reading: Hebrews 11:15-16
And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned. But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.
Reflections: Abraham and his people kept living a nomadic life with the view of getting to a new city prepared for them by God. They never ever caught even a glimpse of that city but they kept moving on until they died. Not once did they ever make the decision of going back to their country of origin. What kept them exhibiting this attitude is described by the Hebrews writer as their ability to stay unmindful of their home country. According to the writer, if they had been mindful of their homeland, they would have the cause to abandon the mission of the seemingly endless journey of going to a new city promised them by God. The Greek word translated mindful is ‘mnēmoneuō’. It means to recollect or rehearse something in your mind. There are things you must not recollect or rehearse in your mind. If you do, you will not be able to keep up with the faith of getting something new done in your life. Such was the case of Lot’s wife. She failed to make it to a land of safety and became a pillar of salt just because she thought of her home in Sodom and Gomorrah and looked back as they journeyed out. (Luke 17:32, Genesis 19:26). Watch out for the things that you must not recollect or rehearse in your mind and just keep them out of your thoughts.
Prayer: Oh Lord help me keep my mind shut to thoughts that will hinder me from achieving set goals in life.
Confession: There are things I do not recollect or rehearse in my mind! My mind is shut to such thoughts as I pursue the path of righteousness.
