Scripture Reading:1 Samuel 8:19-20
Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us; That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles
Reflections: Israel had a distinct political system. They were ruled directly by God through Judges. God was their king, and He fought their battles. As time passed, they became attracted to the kingship system of the surrounding nations and began to desire it. As a result, they approached Samuel, the Prophet, and requested that God grant them their heart’s desire for a king. Unfortunately, they did not realize that their action meant they had rejected God, and in the years to follow, they would suffer dire consequences. In life, the temptation to follow people and trends instead of holding on to God and His ways is high. It is crucial to resist such tendencies. Follow God, not people or what is popular!
Prayer: Dear Lord, please guide me to follow your path instead of being influenced by people or trends.
Confession: I follow God, not people or trends.
