Friday, 16th June 2023: Don’t ever ignore the joyful sound!

Scripture Reading: Psalm 89:15
Blessed is the people that know the joyful sound: they shall walk, O LORD, in the light of thy countenance

Reflections: The Psalmist describes a joyful sound associated with blessings in Israel. He asserts that only those who recognize and respond to the sound’s demands receive of its associated blessings. This reminds us of the trumpet’s joyful sound that proclaimed the Jubilee year (Lev 25:8-9). This special year, decreed by God, occurs after every 7th sabbath year and was characterized by the cancellation of debts, the release of all captives, and the return of property to its rightful owners (Leviticus 25:1-13). The year was also devoted to rest, to the extent that farming was prohibited. God blesses farming in the sixth sabbath year to provide food for three years (Lev 25:21) so that Israel will have enough food without farming during the jubilee year. Overall, the joyful sound represents God’s rule, which controls how we live. As long as we follow it, it opens a door to heavenly blessings for us. Let God’s word be a joyful sound to you as it guides your way of life!

Prayer: Oh Lord, thank you for your word that governs my life. It is a joyful sound.

Confession: I know and yield to the demands of the joyful sound!
